چکیده

-A method for obtaining reared adults of net-winged midges (Diptera: Blephariceridae) is presented. Rocks with attached pupae are removed from the stream and placed in a container maintained at high humidity. Survival and emergence rates exceeding 60% were recorded for several species of Nearctic Blephaecera. This method is ideal for associating pupae and adults of blepharicerids and other torrenticolous flies.

A new genus and species of net-winged midge from Madagascar (Diptera: Blephariceridae: Blepharicerinae).

Larvae of a species from the subfamily Blepharicerinae were first discovered in the 1950's, but the lack of additional records prevented description of the species. A recent study of important additional specimens from the late Brian Stuckenberg has provided the basis for describing this unusual fly. This paper provides a description of larvae, pupae, and adults of Aphromyia stuckenbergi gen. e...

Differentiation of larvae and pupae of aquatic genera of Nearctic Hemerodromiinae (Diptera: Empididae)

Larvae and pupae representing four genera of aquatic dance flies, Chelifera Macquart, Hemerodromia Meigen, Metachela Coquillett, and Neoplasta Coquillett (Diptera: Empididae: Hemerodromiinae) are differentiated, diagnosed, illustrated, and keyed. Results are based on: limited rearing associations of larvae, pupae, and adults; external morphology of larvae, pupae, and pupal exuviae; and fragment...

Maintenance of Glossina palpalis fed through bat's wing membrane on defibrinated blood.

Teneral laboratory-bred Glossina palpalis flies were successfully fed through bat's wing membrane on defibrinated blood by means of a technique developed in this laboratory. Using this technique almost 100% of the flies engorged blood through the membrane. Ten to fifteen flies were kept in Standard 'Geigy 10' or 'Geigy 15' cages and records were kept of mortality and the weights of the pupae pr...

In vitro rearing Oestrus caucasicus third-instar larvae and pupae (Diptera: Oestridae) from naturally-infested Iberian ibex, Capra Pyrenaica (Artiodactyla: Bovidae).

Third-instar Oestrus caucasicus larvae (n = 236) obtained from Iberian ibex, Copra pyrenaica, were reared in a laboratory to obtain adult flies. They were maintained at a temperature of 21.9 +/- 2.7 degrees C and a relative humidity of 38.9 +/- 8.0 %. In all, 78 imagos emerged (33.1 %), with a sex-ratio at emergence not differing significantly from 1:1; 25 larvae did not complete pupariation. A...

Factors Affecting Species Identifications of Blow Fly Pupae Based upon Chemical Profiles and Multivariate Statistics

Alternative methods for the identification of species of blow fly pupae have been developed over the years that consist of the analyses of chemical profiles. However, the effect of biotic and abiotic factors that could influence the predictive manner for the tests have not been evaluated. The lipids of blowfly pupae (Cochliomyia macellaria, Lucilia cuprina, Lucilia sericata, and Phormia regina)...
